Knowledge of Self
by Supreme Understanding
Faroa rebuilt the whole book as 9 concepts you read in order, at the depth you choose. The first concept is free to read in full - a 6-minute read.
Overview
Most people inherit an identity without ever questioning it. The Nation of Gods and Earths insists that is the root of every other problem.
Supreme Understanding and more than fifty contributors build a case that self-knowledge is not introspection for its own sake. It is the precondition for any meaningful change.
- Who am I, and why am I here?
- Who is God, and where on Earth is he?
- Why do people of color face the conditions they face?
- What can one person actually do about racism and poverty?
These are the questions the anthology takes seriously, the ones most traditions ask followers to defer or accept on faith.
Knowledge replaces belief as the operating principle.
What You Will Encounter
The ideas ahead cover theology, history, mathematics as lived practice, gender, and the ethics of teaching. They are dense and unapologetically particular to the Five Percenter tradition, yet they reach toward anyone willing to reason carefully about identity and power.

Theology, Identity, and Living Mathematics
- 04The Black Man as God, the Black Woman as EarthHold the title to a standard, not just a claim: ask how God or Earth would actually conduct themselves today, then act accordingly.
- 05Supreme Mathematics as a Framework for RealityApply the Knowledge principle first: before acting on any situation, name what you actually know versus what you are assuming or inheriting uncritically.
- 06Islam as Natural Way of Life, Not ReligionAudit what you know versus what you merely believe, and rebuild your practice on the former.
- 07Black Origins and the Counter-Historical NarrativeQuestion the origin of every history you were handed and ask whose authority it served.

Concept 01 of 9
Self-Knowledge as the Root of Transformation
Before any plan, any movement, any revolution, Supreme Understanding teaches that the first and most urgent work is knowing who and what you are.
The Question That Changes Everything
Supreme Understanding holds that most people move through life without ever seriously asking who they are. That unanswered question is not a private inconvenience, it is the engine of collective suffering.
In his framing, ignorance of self is not neutral. It is a condition that can be cultivated and maintained by those who benefit from it.
Knowing Before Doing
The sequence Supreme Understanding insists on is deliberate: know yourself first, then your world, then your role in transforming it. Reversing the order produces action without roots.
A person who acts without self-knowledge borrows their identity from whoever has defined them, school, media, the street, the state. That borrowed identity serves someone else's purpose.
One Illustration of the Principle
Consider someone trying to escape poverty through sheer discipline alone. Without knowing the historical and structural forces that created that poverty, and without knowing their own inherited worth, their effort carries a hidden ceiling. The work is real, but the frame is wrong.
When that same person first grasps who they are, where their people come from, and what forces have worked against them, the ceiling lifts. The effort is the same; the trajectory changes.
The Most Direct Misreading to Avoid
Supreme Understanding is explicit: self-knowledge is not self-improvement in the conventional sense. It is not optimizing habits or upgrading skills. It is a reckoning with one's actual nature, history, and place in the universe.
Know self. Then move.
The 5-10-85 Map of Awareness
Supreme Understanding elaborates a foundational cosmological structure through which the NGE reads social reality. It is not merely a metaphor, it is treated as a precise map of how awareness is distributed.
- The 85
- The majority, kept unaware of their own nature and history, managed through distraction, religion used as sedation, and manufactured desire.
- The 10
- A minority that possesses knowledge of the 85's condition and uses it to maintain control, economic, political, psychological.
- The 5
- The 'poor righteous teachers', those who have attained self-knowledge and hold a duty to share it, especially with youth and the marginalized.
For Supreme Understanding, knowing which category one currently occupies is itself a form of self-knowledge. The 85 do not know they are the 85. The first rupture of awareness is recognizing the condition.
Where the Framework Holds and Where It Strains
This map holds most clearly where ignorance is demonstrably manufactured, where media, education, and institutions systematically withhold accurate history from people of color. It strains when applied rigidly to every individual situation, since the book's own contributors acknowledge that consciousness moves, that people shift between categories through learning.
| Condition | Relation to Self-Knowledge | Path Forward |
|---|---|---|
| 85, unaware | Self defined by external forces | Encounter with rigorous self-directed study |
| 10, knowing but exploiting | Knowledge used to diminish others | Accountability; the book does not redeem this position |
| 5, knowing and teaching | Self-knowledge shared as obligation | Each one teach one; the knowledge must circulate |
Practice: The Sequence as Method
- Name your condition: Honestly assess what picture of yourself you have inherited and from whom it came.
- Study the counter-history: Engage the NGE's account of Black origins and civilization to replace the inherited distortion.
- Reason it through: The NGE insists on knowledge, not belief, test every claim against your own observation and logic.
- Teach: Once you have genuine understanding, the obligation to share it is immediate, especially toward younger people in your community.
The 'each one teach one' ethic is not optional in Supreme Understanding's framing. Holding knowledge without passing it on makes one complicit in the ignorance one has escaped.
Divinity Is Not Distant
Supreme Understanding's most radical claim, and the one the anthology returns to repeatedly, is that the Black man is God. This is not metaphor or aspiration. The teaching holds that divinity is not a distant abstraction awaiting prayer; it is embodied, present, and walking.
ALLAH, in this framework, is read as an acronym: Arm, Leg, Leg, Arm, Head, the physical form of the Original Man. The divine is not above the human; the human is the divine made manifest.
Knowledge Versus Belief: An Epistemological Line
Supreme Understanding draws a hard line between faith-based religion and the NGE's commitment to reasoned knowledge. The anthology is explicit: Five Percenters are not Muslims. They share vocabulary and some foundational texts with Islam, but the NGE does not operate on belief, it operates on what can be reasoned and demonstrated.
| Basis | Religion (as critiqued) | NGE Epistemology |
|---|---|---|
| How claims are held | Belief, faith, scripture taken on authority | Reasoning, demonstration, personal verification |
| Source of the divine | External God above the human | The Original Man himself, present and embodied |
| Relation to Islam | Shared vocabulary acknowledged | Explicitly not Muslim; a distinct tradition |
| Purpose of practice | Salvation in an afterlife | Transformation of self and community now |
Where the System Confronts Its Own Tensions
The anthology does not pretend the tradition is settled on every question. Gender is one genuine site of tension. The Earth concept honors the Black woman as foundational, but contributors disagree on how much independence versus interdependence the framework demands.
Supreme Understanding presents multiple voices rather than resolving the dispute, which means this is a live internal debate, not a solved doctrine.
A second tension the book itself names: the 5 percent can become its own form of elitism. Those who carry knowledge risk using it to distinguish themselves rather than distribute it. Supreme Understanding's answer is the teaching obligation, the five percent exist to reduce the eighty-five, not to celebrate their own elevation.
The Counter-Historical Foundation
Self-knowledge, in this teaching, cannot be separated from historical knowledge. The claim that Black Africans are the original people and the founders of global civilization is not background decoration, it is load-bearing. A person cannot fully know themselves while accepting a history that erases or demotes their people.
- The counter-history is not supplemental reading; it is prerequisite to accurate self-knowledge.
- Eurocentric accounts of human history are treated as active distortions, not neutral omissions.
- Reclaiming this history is framed as a personal and political act simultaneously.
- Islam in this context means a natural way of life, not a conventional religion, the language is reclaimed as well as the history.
Supreme Understanding holds that personal development, mind, body, family, community, is inherently political. Poverty and racism are named as products of manufactured mass ignorance. The cure begins not with policy but with individuals reclaiming an accurate picture of themselves.
Revolution is personal before it is collective, but it must become collective to be complete.
